Career Academies give students the opportunity to learn about and experience various career fields while they are still in high school. Through dual-credit and AP classes as well as various certification programs students get a head start on their future.

Why Career Academy?

The Career Academies at Plattsmouth High School have been named Model Academies by the National Career Academy Coalition. The opportunities students have through the Career Academies prepare them for a successful future!

  • Students take a Career Explorations course which guides them through multiple career options and inventories to determine their path. Once students know more about their interests and strengths they select a Career Academy.

  • Students have the opportunity to change their Academy when they register for classes. The Guidance Office has a simple form that is used to change their Academy.

  • Career Academies allow students to be part of a small learning community of students who have similar interests and learning preferences. Activities in their Advisory are tailored to their areas of interest and provide opportunities to learn more about career fields they are interested in considering. Career Academies help make learning relevant to students and keep them engaged.

  • Even if a student is unsure about their career interest they can select a Career Academy based on subjects they like and activities they enjoy. Often these are indicators of strengths that will develop into a career interest in the future.

  • Students participate in a sequence of experiences based on their grade levels and interests. All students complete a Career Exploration course and participate in Career Readiness activities in their Advisory classes. Students also hear from Career Speakers working in various businesses and industries and have opportunities to visit or tour some facilities to learn about different careers available. During their Junior and Senior year, students have the opportunity to complete a Job Shadow experience or register for an Internship to learn through working in a particular field. The many opportunities are tailored to meet the needs of each student as they find their path.
